5 OTA Optimization Strategies That Actually Move the Needle

Most hotels are leaving money on the table with their OTA listings. Here are five proven strategies to improve your ranking, click-through rate, and conversion.

Online travel agencies drive a significant share of hotel bookings — but most independent operators treat their OTA listings as a set-it-and-forget-it task. The result is a listing that underperforms, costs more in commission than it should, and fails to convert the travelers who do find it.

Here are five strategies we consistently recommend to hotel operators who want to get more out of their OTA presence without simply lowering their rates.

1. Audit your photo order every quarter

The first photo in your listing is the single most important conversion factor. OTA algorithms surface listings with high click-through rates — and click-through starts with the hero image. Most hotels upload photos once and never revisit the order. Seasonally rotate your lead image to match what travelers are looking for: pool shots in summer, cozy lobby photos in winter, exterior shots when your curb appeal is at its best.

2. Respond to every review within 48 hours

Review response rate is a ranking signal on most major OTAs. More importantly, a thoughtful response to a negative review often converts skeptical travelers better than a string of five-star reviews with no engagement. Keep responses brief, professional, and specific — generic "thank you for your feedback" replies do nothing for your ranking or your reputation.

3. Use rate parity strategically, not blindly

Rate parity clauses require you to match your OTA rate on your own website — but they don't prevent you from offering value-adds on direct bookings. Free parking, early check-in, a complimentary breakfast, or a room upgrade for direct bookers all increase the perceived value of booking direct without technically violating parity agreements. This shifts your most price-sensitive guests to OTAs while retaining higher-value direct bookers.

4. Optimize your listing description for search, not just humans

OTA search algorithms index your listing description. Include the specific amenities travelers search for — "free parking," "pet-friendly," "airport shuttle," "kitchenette" — in your description text, not just in the amenity checkboxes. Travelers who filter by these features will find you; travelers who search by keyword will also find you.

5. Monitor your competitive set weekly

Most OTAs show you where you rank against comparable properties in your market. Check this weekly, not monthly. If a competitor drops their rate significantly, you need to know quickly — either to respond with a targeted promotion or to hold your rate and differentiate on value. Reactive pricing decisions made a week late cost real revenue.
